Facilities

Ceramic materials laboratory  facilities are roughly divided into two categories: Processing and Characterization.

The central topic guiding research within the laboratory is implied by its name, the processing and characteristics of ceramic materials.

The following text gives a virtual tour of our facilities, highlighting the equipment and the respective applications of each.

1. Synthesis Laboratory (Sol-Gel)

CIMAV, Mexico acrylamide polimerization route; colloidal gel and hydrolisis route; Pechini method.

Research & Teaching

My research interests involve the application of x-ray spectroscopic techniques to the investigation of the electronic structure and magnetic behaviour of ceramic materials.

The spectroscopic techniques use high-brightness synchrotron x-ray sources such as the ALS. The techniques used are soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), soft x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) and soft x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS).

These x-ray spectroscopic techniques reveal detailed information about the conduction band structure, the valence band structure, the core-level structure of the material respectively.

Electronic relaxation processes of both pure and dope d transition metal oxide semiconductors is one of my principal research interests.

Local electronic structure was determined by synchrotron radiation based x-ray emission and x-ray absorption and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectroscopies at the L2,3 of Vanadium and Titanium in YVO4-YVO3 and LaVO4-LaVO3 compounds at the Advanced Light Source, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, California, USA.

In order to obtain element specific, symmetry and state selective measurements of the occupied partial density of states or occupied molecular orbitals of these solids.

The project on electronic structure of vanadates and titanates measured by x-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy is already underway.

My other principal research interest is in the magnetic behaviour of ceramics (in particular ferrites) doped with transition metal oxides such as: Vanadium and Cobalt. More information about specific areas of research is available  via the Research link.

You can also find a complete listing of the scientific publications that I have helped to contribute to the literature.
